My name is Miles Shuler and I am from Long Branch, New Jersey. I played my high school football and ran track at Long Branch High school (Same school where Sam Mills attended before becoming a legend and NFL Hall of Famer). I was a 2 Sport High school All-American in football as a Quarterback and track & field 100 meters: (10.39FAT*)
After High school I went to Rutgers University for two years and then transferred to Northwestern. Greg Schiano left Rutgers and took the Head Coaching position for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after my first year there. Kyle Flood took the job after and I felt like his staff didn’t know how to utilize my skill set and I needed to transfer.
I transferred to Northwestern and played there for my Redshirt Junior and Senior year. I only had 23 touches my junior year due to a hand injury midway through the season. And then only 15 catches my senior due to playing with a Freshman QB and a young O-Line. But I had plenty of explosive plays on special teams as a punt returner.
After college, I was able to test well at my Pro Day, and that gave me an opportunity with the Carolina Panthers. I was invited to Rookie Minicamp and then later signed a contract after the last Rookie Minicamp practice. Then I went through OTAs and minicamp, and was able to make it to the last round of cuts. Then I was cut after my performance against the Patriots in a Preseason Game. I had 3 catches, 27 yds, and a 2 point conversion in 2 drives in the 4th quarter. The GM told me it was out of me and this 6’6 receiver that came out of Tulsa University. He also told me that he felt like he was a project and wanted to go with him.
I missed a year of ball after getting cut by the Panthers because I wasn’t ready to go play in the CFL. I thought I was going to get another opportunity to tryout for a NFL team, which did not happen.
The following year I signed a contract with the Edmonton Eskimos as a practice squad player. I spent the whole year on practice squad because we had the leading receiving core in the league (Duke Williams signed with the Buffalo Bills & Derel Walker was made the highest paid receiver in the CFL the following year, and another 1000 yard receiver). Despite of that, I felt like I was the best player on that team. I just had to wait my turn.
When the season ended I thought I was going to be a free agent because I was told that I signed a one-year contract, but it was really a two-year deal. So I already had my eyes set on the alliance league that was starting up that Spring. But I ultimately decided to come back because I knew I was going to be the leading receiver for the team that year. However, after learning that I wanted to initially leave the team, there was bad blood between me and the GM, and he ended up cutting me after the 1st day of practice.
The timing of me getting cut affected me a ton because all the CFL rosters were set and all the showcases for the XFL Draft were already done. So basically I flew under everyone’s radar all of last season.
So now this brings me here.. I’m extremely grateful for this opportunity and I’m here to show that I deserve a job playing somewhere.
